Navigating Insurance Claims

Doesn’t Have to Be Stressful.

Dealing with storm or hail damage can be overwhelming, but handling your insurance claim shouldn’t be. We’re here to guide you and answer any questions you may have to make sure you get the coverage you need and the repairs your home deserves. From documenting damage to working with your provider, we’ll simplify the process and restore your home with confidence.
1

Acknowledgment of Your Claim

  • Confirmation: You’ll receive a confirmation from your insurance company that they have received your claim. This may be via email, phone, or mail.
  • Claim Number: You’ll be assigned a claim number, which you should use in all future communications regarding the claim.
2

Initial Review

  • Assignment of Adjuster: An insurance adjuster will be assigned to your claim. The adjuster’s job is to investigate and assess the damage or loss.
  • Contact from Adjuster: The adjuster will contact you to discuss the details of your claim and may request additional documentation or information.
3

Inspection and Assessment

  • Inspection: The adjuster may schedule an inspection of the damaged property. This can involve a visit to your home or business to assess the damage.
  • Estimation of Costs: The adjuster will estimate the cost of repairs or replacement based on the inspection. They may work with contractors or other professionals to get accurate estimates.
4

Review and Approval

  • Claim Review: The insurance company will review the adjuster’s report and determine whether the claim is covered under your policy.
  • Approval or Denial: You will be informed whether your claim has been approved, partially approved, or denied. If approved, you’ll receive details on the coverage and any deductible that will apply.
5

Settlement Offer

  • Settlement Proposal: If your claim is approved, the insurance company will make a settlement offer. This is the amount they are willing to pay for your claim.
  • Negotiation: You have the right to negotiate the settlement offer if you believe it does not fully cover your loss. This might involve providing additional evidence or estimates.
6

Payment

  • Receiving Payment: Once the settlement is agreed upon, the insurance company will issue payment. This could be directly to you or to your contractor, depending on the situation.
  • Partial Payments: In some cases, you may receive an initial payment followed by additional payments as repairs are made.
7

Repairs and Finalization

  • Repair Process: You’ll need to coordinate with contractors to begin the repair process. Keep all receipts and documentation for any work done.
  • Final Inspection: Once repairs are completed, there might be a final inspection to ensure everything is in order.
  • Claim Closure: Once all payments are made and repairs are completed, the claim will be closed.

Word of Warning: Watch Out For Storm Chasers!

Let’s be real, there are a lot of sketchy contractors rolling into town after a storm, hoping to make quick money. Here’s the problem: If they’re not licensed in your city, good luck getting help when something goes wrong. You might end up with more problems than you started with.

Worse yet, they could take your deposit and disappear faster than a summer Chinook! Always ask for proof of licensing, insurance, and a solid reputation. After all, you pay the same deductible whether you hire a good or bad contractor, so choose wisely.

Before You Hire Any Contractor, Check These Off:

  • Current and valid business license to work in the City of Calgary.
  • Current Workman’s compensation WCB Certificate for their workers
  • Liability Insurance
  • Letter of “Good Standing” from local supply houses
  • “A” rating from BBB
  • Good 5-star reviews online
  • A good written quote of ALL details to be covered in the contract
  • General contractor who is licensed to manage multiple trades

FAQ: The Fun, But Important Stuff

Insurance usually covers more than you think. Your roof doesn’t need to look like Swiss cheese to qualify for replacement! Even small cracks, dents, and bruises might mean a full roof replacement. Yes, even if it’s just “cosmetic.” Siding, windows, patio furniture—it’s all up for repair or replacement. (But really, check your policy first, because not all policies are equal. Fun, right?)
Nope! Hail damage is classified as an “act of God.” Unless you’ve somehow figured out how to control the weather, your insurance rates shouldn’t go up. However, insurance companies may raise everyone’s rates because, well, Calgary weather isn’t exactly kind.
Absolutely not! You’re the boss here. Feel free to choose the contractor you trust (like us!). In fact, it’s your right. We can also help you get a fair estimate that your insurance company should respect.
No need! There are industry-standard rates, and a good general contractor (like us, wink wink) can give you everything you need. We handle it all—roofing, siding, windows, gutters, you name it.
As long as no work or materials have been delivered, you can usually cancel without any penalties. Just make sure you do it in writing. Oh, and watch out for shady contractors—we’ve seen plenty of out-of-towners trying to make a quick buck without following Calgary’s building codes.
